Passing of the Gavel: Honoring Leadership and Believing in What’s Next
One of the most meaningful moments of our Annual Banquet each year is the Passing of the Gavel. While it may seem simple on the surface, it carries deep significance. It represents trust, continuity, and the responsibility of leadership. It is a moment that honors what has been accomplished and celebrates what is still to come.
This year, we had the privilege of watching Susan Sykes, our 2025 Chair of the Board, pass the gavel to Doug Blevins, who will serve as our 2026 Chair.
Susan’s leadership over the past year has been marked by dedication, wisdom, and a steady commitment to strengthening the Walton County Chamber of Commerce. She led with clarity, compassion, and a servant’s heart. Her approach to leadership was grounded in collaboration, encouragement, and a deep belief in the power of relationships. We are incredibly grateful for the guidance, direction, and stability she provided throughout her term.
The act of passing the gavel is more than tradition. It is a moment of gratitude for what has been built and excitement for what lies ahead. It is a reminder that leadership is not about one person, but about stewardship. It is about caring for the organization, honoring those who serve, and ensuring that the mission continues to grow stronger with each new leader.
As Susan passed the gavel to Doug, it symbolized confidence, trust, and the continuation of that mission.
We are excited to welcome Doug Blevins as our 2026 Chair. Doug brings passion, experience, and a genuine love for Walton County. His leadership reflects integrity, commitment, and a desire to see our Chamber, our businesses, and our community continue to thrive. We look forward to the vision, energy, and heart he will bring in the year ahead.
This year’s Passing of the Gavel carried even greater meaning as we step into 2026 with our word for the year: Believe.
We believe in the leaders who step forward to serve.
We believe in the strength of our Chamber.
We believe in our businesses, our community, each other ,and our future.
As Susan passed the gavel to Doug, it was a visible reminder that belief is what carries us forward. Belief in each other. Belief in our mission. And belief in what Walton County can continue to become.
The Passing of the Gavel is not just about a change in leadership. It is about continuity. It is about gratitude. It is about hope. It is about believing that the work we do together matters and that the future is bright because of those willing to lead.
Thank you, Susan, for your leadership, dedication, and heart for the Chamber.
Welcome, Doug, as you step into this role with confidence and purpose.
Here’s to a year of belief, collaboration, and continued growth for the Walton County Chamber of Commerce.
