What’s the saying?  If you’re not networking, you’re not working. Ahh YES, that’s it!  Any business owner will tell you there is a lot of truth to that statement.  But what is networking and how is it done?

Networking is more than going to an event, finding existing friends, and talking to them.  There is some of that, but moreover, it is a way to been seen, get known, make connections, and build lasting and mutually beneficial professional relationships.  The long-term goal - business growth for everyone.  Networking can be intimidating, especially for newbies.  That said, here are some tips and suggestions when venturing out into the wild.

First, keep clear on the simple objective: Meet new people and reconnect with others to build relationships.  Don’t go with the intention of selling ‘to’ the room; sell ‘through’ the room.

Second, if possible, research who will be attending.  Narrowing the list of who you want to connect with is key to a productive outing.

Third, prepare for conversations.  There are four topics EVERYONE can relate to and are generally easy to engage with: Family, occupation, recreation, and dreams.  Think of an opener for each of these and you will easily find common ground to build upon.

Fourth, during the event, seek out people on your narrow list first.  This is not speed dating, and the object is not to give your card to as many people as possible.  Attendees will notice this type of behavior and avoid you at future gatherings.

Fifth, when making a connection, speak with conviction. Don’t have seller’s breath but do share appropriate information and how to stay in contact.

After the event ends, then what?

You start building from the camaraderie planted and continue to develop rapport and trust.  How? By taking the next 3 steps:

  1. Follow-up with them within 24 hours, not in a sales capacity
  2. Make contact with them within 7 days
  3. Get a one-to-one meeting within 30 days

Networking is a skill that takes practice and will become easier with each iteration.

Not ready for a professional event?  Ask your friends and family at holiday gatherings if you can practice with them.  Of course they will say yes!  They want you to sharpen your skills and succeed just as much as you do.  Practice now and come 2026, strategic and effective networking will be the name of your game.

Want to improve your networking talents?  Here is my challenge to you.  Apply the above tips at the next three networking events you attend by finding two people you have not spoken to before, create a compelling conversation with each one lasting at least fifteen minutes.  You will recognize how easy it is, and you might just find others noticing the real conversation occurring and their interest in joining - invite them to join - you never know, your ideal client might be the one listening.

Happy Networking!
